Clarkson? Insensitive? Really?

The Mail failed to get Jeremy Clarkson out of the BBC, but maybe London's Greek community and the PCC will have more success getting him off the Sun's staff-list.

The London Daily News:
The BBC Top Gear and Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson angered the Greek population of the United Kingdom with racist and insensitive comments made in his weekly newspaper column in the Saturday edition of The Sun, were describes Greece as a "toilet".

In an article "Holiday ad cuts a'tache" Clarkson refers to a recent campaign by the Greek National Tourist board in London, were a women is pictured with Clarkson referring "and a girl who didn’t look all that Greek either. She didn’t have a moustache for instance".

Clarkson referred recently to lorry drivers murdering prostitutes and was given a warning by the BBC, but to insult an entire nation in this manner is way off the mark.

The London Daily News has formally written to the editor of The Sun and a formal complaint is being made to the Press Complaints Commission which has strict guidelines over accuracy:

"i) The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information, including pictures.

iii) The Press, whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact."

Had these comments been made about Muslims or African-Caribbean’s there would have been calls for Clarkson immediate dismissal in any case The Sun has not made any remedy to date.

The London Daily News calls for Clarkson to be sacked from The Sun for making these comments

Ha, ha,

The London Daily News (never heard of them before) are being a bit precious aren't they? It was a joke - not a very good joke, but a joke.

We seem to be heading to a place where nobody will ever be allowed to say anything for fear that somebody, somewhere will be "offended".

I hold many views that a large proportion of the population would find offensive* and I couldn't give a hoot. If you find what I say offensive then either persuade me to change my views by logical argument or don't talk to me (or buy my paper) but, please, stop whining.

I'm not a big fan of the Clarkeson but I don't see how this really fits with Tabloid Lies.

*For example: all religion is superstitious rubbish.

Wasp_Box, the mission of the blog is to highlight lies told by the Sun, but the 'media watch' beat does allow for an occasional stroll into grey areas. This item, for instance, reports a complaint that focuses in part on "inaccurate, misleading or distorted information".

Tim,

I wasn't complaining - I thought it was amusing. My point was that the complaint (that focuses in part on "inaccurate, misleading or distorted information) is actually risible.

We agree on that.

It seems since the Ross/Brand thing that everybody wants a piece of the action.

(For those who care; John Beyer is the current leader in the race to fabricate further outrage.)

Mary Whitehouse in drag.

While you're here - would you consider turning off pre-post moderation. It smells of censorship. You can always moderate later if some idiot posts offensive garbage.

I appreciate you may be getting thousands of disparaging comments from enraged Sun journalists (are you?) but I really dislike it.

We might be able to relax a little on the moderation. What I'm most wary of is accidental/deliberate libel.

I want to take a closer look at this and a few other issues on this blog as soon as the Daily Mail beastie is (finally) ready to go.

This blog highlights issues of hypocrasy, among other things.

Jezza may have upset a whole lot of Greek women with his crap joke, published in the Sun, but I seem to remember the Sun, along with the Mail, recently wanting a couple of people sacked for a crap joke.
